According to a recent research which was published and recognized in the British Medical Journal’s respiratory journal Thorax, youngsters and teenagers who are fond of fast food consumption are more likely to develop asthma, eczema and hay fever

A survey was set up by The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) using questionnaires. The survey involved 319,196 participant teenagers who were aged 13 and 14 from about 51 countries. 181,631 parents’ of children aged 6 and 7 in 31 countries. In the questionnaire, they were inquired about symptoms of these three medical conditions whether they had any and they were also inquired about the weekly diet they take specially what types of food they had last year, and how frequently they had it.

Research author Hywel Williams of the Centre for Evidence Based Dermatology, Queen’s Medical Centre, University Hospital, Nottingham, UK believes that they had found clear link between specific foodstuff and severe asthma, eczema and hay fever in a broad research on allergies in young children (6-7 years of age) and teenagers, 13-14 years of age, up till now. Williams, believes that the link between fast food and allergic diseases were promising only in severe cases.

It was seen by the researchers the patients who consumed fruits about three times in a week showed a safety factor for severe asthma. But the likelihood of development of severe asthma, hay fever and eczema is elevated 30% in patients who eat fast food at least three or even more than that each week. The two age groups that were involved showed consistent results.

Williams says that on a safe note, although the research reveals a link between fast food and these disease, it doesn’t however mean that this association is casual. It may also be due to some other factors which might be linked such as behavior which hasn’t been considered in the study or it may be due to biases which occur in researches measuring disease and inquiry regarding food intake previously.

According to study authors if more advanced researches reveal that eating too much fast food does actually gives rise to these allergic conditions, then this could be an important public health concern due to the fact that the consumption of fast food is increasing day by day throughout the world.

Whatever the result, study author Williams instructs that there is a very important message for all parents. According to him, it is not that you should completely stop consuming fast food but rather consume a healthy balanced diet using a lot of fresh fruits and of course little fast food, one to two times every week  instead of three times or even more specially if your kid is allergic.
